Since synthetic fibers don’t produce natural oils like human hair, they don’t need frequent washing. Using a dreadlock-friendly shampoo diluted with water is the best approach. Gently massage your scalp with the shampoo mixture, allowing the lather to rinse over the dreads without excessive scrubbing.

Regular hair conditioners should be avoided, as they can cause buildup and make synthetic dreads slippery. If you have this type, removing them before washing is the best option. They can be gently hand-washed in warm, soapy water, rinsed thoroughly, and air-dried completely before reinstalling or storing them.

Although synthetic dreadlocks can last for years with proper care, it is recommended not to wear them continuously for more than three months at a time.

The ideal wear time is about one to two months before taking a short break to allow the scalp to rest. This helps prevent tension, buildup, and discomfort. After a few days, you can reinstall them or switch up your look.
